Bari is known for being the city where lie the relics of St. Nicholas . This privilege has made Bari and its Basilica one of the favorite centers of Orthodoxy in Italy .

The Basilica of San Nicola , built in Romanesque style between 1087 and 1100 during the Norman rule , houses the relics of the saint of Myra , transferred in May 1087 to sixty-two sailors from Bari .
The bones of St. Nicholas are kept under the central altar of the crypt of the basilica and one of the side apses is destined to Orthodox worship .
The old town is a peninsula within the same city , bordered by ancient walls ; They are placed inside the Norman Castle , the Basilica of St. Nicholas , the Cathedral of San Sabino , as well as countless testimonies of our history ( from ancient Rome until the time the Bourbon ) .
